Gin

For some reason I've been convinced that I don't like gin, but trying it again today, I'm not sure why I thought I didn't like it.  Zach made me a gin and tonic and it was as tasty as my old standby, a vodka tonic.

Pimm's Italiano

We've been drinking Pimm's Cups since last year, but tried a little different version.  I like this version better.

A Shandy or Radler

We had left over pale ale and sparkling lemonade from a party so instead of our customary Sunday bloody mary, Zach suggested we make a Shandy.  We mixed them 50/50 lemonade and beer.  The results are very drinkable, which is good because I was planning to make this my standby when we go to Oktoberfest this fall in Munich, where I'll be ordering it as a Radler (German for cyclist).  I figure if I'm going to drink nonstop for several days and plan to keep up, I better have a less alcoholic fall back or I'll be under the table in no time.

Making Limoncello

In getting ready to leave town for a couple of weeks and having an abundance of lemons, we decided to make some limoncello.  Actually we decided to make Meyer limoncello and limoncello with regular lemons.  It will be at least 6 weeks before we can compare the two, but that's just in time for warmer weather drinks on the deck.

Vermont Gold

Last night we cracked into a bottle of vodka our friends brought us back from Vermont. (Thanks, K&F!)  It's made from maple sap, but isn't maple flavored.  It's a smooth and nice drinking vodka.  The website has recipes, a lot of which incorporate maple syrup, of course. http://www.vermontspirits.com/site.html#/home

Two new things last night

We started with a Jack Rose cocktail.  Zach went to the liquor store yesterday and purchased brandy and sherry for Thanksgiving.  We found a recipe for a Jack Rose, which uses apple jack brandy, simple syrup, grenadine, maraschino cherry, lemon juice and an apple slice.  After getting past the brandy smell, the drink was quite tasty.  Here's a recipe, but you'll want to add about three quarters of an ounce simple syrup: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/drink/views/Jack-Rose-236103.  The resulting cocktail is pretty too.

While sipping our cocktails, we cracked into a gift we hadn't yet opened.  Last Christmas we received Foodie Fight, a trivia game about all things food.  So last night we gave it a go.  It was fun and we learned some new food facts.

Road trippin'

I am in the middle of a two week tour of the west spending some time in Denver with my friend Karen.  I have tried a few things, mostly food - duck confit sandwich, blueberry lavender lemonade and a sea salt dark chocolate bark.  All of these were wonderfully tasty.
