Cooking French Laundry on a weeknight

I worked from home on Wednesday and having some extra time with no commute, I went trolling for recipes.  I found this one, which happened to be a completely doable recipe from the French Laundry cookbook and we had all of the ingredients (minus the black truffles, which we omitted anyway) in the house.  It was super easy and very good.  This success makes me want to tackle more of the recipes in the cookbook.

Wearing a tie to work

Zach got this pretty tie from Target a couple of weeks ago and it seemed more to me that the tie was really made to be worn by a woman.  Today I sported it with a blue shirt, grey pants, grey cardigan and a pair of my new earrings.   Oh yeah, if you're going to wear a tie, you also have to learn to tie one.  Yep, that's right, I tied that tie and I'm never untying it, ever.

Making earrings

Yesterday I had Zach drop me at Michaels while he went and washed the car.  While I had the intention of buying a wood shelf, when that wasn't available, I browsed through the jewelry making supplies.  Inspired by the pieces they had and how inexpensive they were, I bought a few and made some earrings.  I wore the first ones shown today to work and I think their my favorite.  Initially I was worried they were too big, especially since I hardly ever wear earrings, but no one commented on them, so they must have seemed natural enough.

A Shandy or Radler

We had left over pale ale and sparkling lemonade from a party so instead of our customary Sunday bloody mary, Zach suggested we make a Shandy.  We mixed them 50/50 lemonade and beer.  The results are very drinkable, which is good because I was planning to make this my standby when we go to Oktoberfest this fall in Munich, where I'll be ordering it as a Radler (German for cyclist).  I figure if I'm going to drink nonstop for several days and plan to keep up, I better have a less alcoholic fall back or I'll be under the table in no time.

Playing the tourist

Update:  Here are some pictures from the trip thanks to the camera card recovery skills of my husband.

I'm in Dutch Harbor/Unalaska for work this week, which generally means lots of time spent inside a room providing information to people.  However, last night my co-worker and I grabbed our cameras and played the tourists.  We took pictures of bald eagles, the old Russian Orthodox church, the mountains, water, etc.  We didn't spot any of the boats from the Deadliest Catch show that is based out of here, but perhaps today or tomorrow.

Carrot Cake Cookies

They turned out so so.  I think next time I'll just make a carrot cake.

Taking out the Schwinn

Zach and I took our older bikes out last night to ride to dinner and drinks with friends.  I love my old Schwinn, but unfortunately it's a bit too short for me, which means lots of work to make it go.  Regardless, riding it is lots of fun.  Hopefully, I'll get this bike out more often this summer than I have in the past.

Making profiteroles

We had a new coworker of mine and his wife over for dinner this week and I made these.  I've never made them before.  I ended up cutting them open and filling them with store bought coffee ice cream and topping them with homemade orange liquer and brandy chocolate sauce.  They were so easy that I'm now inspired to make large ones and turn them into cream puffs with fresh whipped cream and strawberries.  Can you tell I'm hungry!?

Becoming a bee keeper

We got our bees today, 5lbs. of them.  Installation into the hive went well with only a single bee sting.  Zach was the bravest of all and dumped the bees into the hive.  I helped and tried to get used to having the bees on me.
