Keeping it in one gear

Today I took Zach's old Raleigh road bike and turned it into a single speed.  Zach helped, of course, but I learned a lot more about how bikes work.  The first picture is of the refinished bike.  The others are in-progress pics.

Pimm's Italiano

We've been drinking Pimm's Cups since last year, but tried a little different version.  I like this version better.

A New 'Do

Similar style, just shorter.  The back is shorter than the sides, something I haven't done before, at least that I can remember.

Sewing

It's not one of my strengths.  My hands shake and apparently I flunked scissors in kindergarten and no one told me (there's always a lot of cutting with sewing for some reason).  Nonetheless, my sister's baby shower is less than a month away and the book with a cute mobile made from a lampshade finally came.

Spatchcock Chicken

Personally, I had never heard the term spatchcock until tonight, let alone would have known that it's an 18th century term from Ireland that means to butterfly.  I did, however, read about someone who cut the time of grilling a whole chicken in half by laying it flat.  When I consulted our bbq cookbook, I learned about spatchcock.

Recycling an old satellite dish

Zach removed the satellite dish from the house about a month ago and I decided it would make a good bird bath, which will actually be the water source for the bees.  I spray painted it a couple of weeks ago and today Zach built a stand for it.  I think it looks pretty sharp.  Now let's see how many bees drown in this one.  They seemed to drown a lot in the other water source we had set up for them.  More twigs and shallower waters should mean more bees can get a drink without drowning.  Here's hoping...

Making a marble cake

I've never had the occasion to make a marbled cake, so I gave it a try this weekend when I found a recipe that used booze, the theme of our latest gourmet night.  The result was a rum scented marble cake.  I filled the center of the cake with fresh blackberries and raspberries and then made some rum vanilla whipped cream to top it all off.  The cake was a hit and turned out well.  I was so relieved as I wasn't sure it had marbled and I wasn't able to find out until cutting it in front of all my foodie friends.

Eschewing the car

Today is bike to work day in Anchorage, but my personal goal is not bike to work from May 1st through the end of the summer with the only exception being the days I have to go to court when my boss insists I drive.  Yesterday I took biking to work a step further and biked to work, then to a mid-day training then home then back out for a birthday party and home.  All in all, a day without driving netted me about 25 miles on the bike.  It's interesting to know how many miles I traveled since I don't pay much attention when I'm driving.  Actually, I'm surprised how many miles I covered. Today I biked to and from work and plan not to get in the car unless its absolutely necessary; of course the beautiful weather helps make that easier. Let's see how long until I need to get in a car again, maybe not until next Wed. when I have to go to court.  That would be nice.
